Two weeks ago, I was on stage with four other folks at the Second Life Community Convention, talking about cybersex. The agenda had slipped its schedule and we were running late, so when it came time for questions, we were only able to take two.

Unfortunately, both questions were from the media -- Spike TV. And it was clear they had not come to the convention out of their passion for Second Life.

What did they ask, when presented with five experts in different aspects of Second Life sex? What did they ask, when allowed to steal the Q&A session from the community? What did they ask, these field correspondents sent to bring the flavor of the convention to viewers at home?

They trotted out The Question. The Question, which you could put to anyone from Oprah to Howard Stern, that has nothing to do with Second Life and everything to do with show hosts in love with being minor celebrities rather than having something real to say.

The Question is, of course, "Is cybersex cheating?"

Few people have answered The Question more often than I have. Over the years, I've developed three stock answers to cycle through, depending on how much the person cares about the answer (you think Spike TV actually cared?) and how much time we have.

But we all know that question cannot be truly answered in a soundbite, even though stock answer number two -- "anything you can do online with a lover you can do online with your partner" -- makes a nice five-second blip for television.

Stroker Serpentine, who seemed as thrilled as I was at this waste of our time, picked stock answer number one: "That's up to each couple to decide for themselves."

That's true, but it assumes an understanding of cybersex and online relationships that most people don't come to until they're in the middle of it. And by then it's too late. (Stock answer number three, by the way, is rather glib: "Yes, but so what?")

I don't object to The Question in principle, just its misuse. It's not something you can whip out for a quickie. It's the start of a much larger conversation about relationships in the modern age.

Let's take a more serious look at The Question by breaking it down into the questions we're really asking:

Noah Gurza is one of the founders of CampusKiss.com, Canada's largest online dating community for university and college students. He posted a survey on the Internet, with 2,684 students from more than 150 universities and colleges in Canada responding.

"Primarily it was an opportunity to gauge the views of students nationwide on their views on sex, their sex lives, practices, and desires," Gurza tells WebMD.

He posed questions like, how many times a week do you have sex? Do you practice monogamy? And the heavy hitter, do you have virtual sex?
Surprising Answers

"We were expecting a high number of students to respond to this question as having engaged in virtual sex," Gurza says. "A number approximating around 50% was our expected guess. Beyond Sex, Where's the Draw of Virtual Worlds Like Second Life?

Techcrunch has recently posted an article about viritual worlds and how they might become part of the web 3.0 fabric. I disagree. I think that most people don't have the time or patience to spend in these worlds and that the real world is quite enough. I have a Second Life account and each time I log on I get frustrated. The last time, just before I posted this article, the screen froze as I tried to figure out how to retrieve a jetpack from a crashed helicopter.

The experience is very neat and almost liberating. You can roam free through the land finding unusual terrain, objects, and people. But it's difficult to figure things out and has a steep learning curve. I've also seen some pretty cool artwork and creative sites. But I still don't think that's enough to bring in the masses. Below the surface is a bubbling sexuality which makes me think Second Life is like the AOL chat rooms of the 90s, a place for virtual liaisons. That's not bad, and it might be enough to power the company. Sex has always been a leading indicator of where the masses are going but I don't think so in this case. Here are a couple of reasons why I don't think virtual worlds are going to take off any time soon:

* It's pretty complicated to learn how to navigate and interact in these virtual worlds. Second Life has a tutorial to get you started. Anything that requires a tutorial is a non-starter in my book.
* It requires too much time to build your character and maintain relationships in these virtual worlds.
* Once the novelty wears off, what's really so fun about running around with an avatar, meeting other avatars?
* People spend so much time in front of a computer for work, are they really going to do this in their leisure time?
* You can't play in a virtual world at work, it's too obvious.
* Virtual sex just doesn't do it for me.

Second Life Bans Online Gaming

Second Life, the popular virtual world on the internet today has declared a ban on online gaming in response to the UIGEA. This virtual utopian world created by Linden Labs will no longer allow its virtual residents to use the Linden Dollars for the purpose of online gaming.

Second Life modified its new gaming policy on 25 July to state in very clearly outlined terms that online gaming in any form was a violation of policy. There has been an outcry among many of Second Life’s virtual citizens who argue that this change in the site’s gaming policy is in violation of its basic tenets which say that "all Residents are legally responsible for their own activities and complying with the laws in the local jurisdiction in which they reside". Second Life responded by saying that this decision was based on "ambiguities of the issues" and that they would continue to evaluate this issue.

Overview of Vivid Cyber Sex Suit

Vivid Entertainment Incorporated’s contribution to the teledildonics industry came out in1999. A black, full-body suit, available in male or female variants, is made entirely of neoprene, which is the same synthetic rubber wetsuits are made of. The suit was equipped with just 36 sensor/actuators, spread over the entire body. Control was primitive, basically consisting of a mouse-driven interface via an on-screen program – not exactly stimulating. Each sensor triggered delivered a minute electrical shock to the area of body around it, causing a muscle contraction. Net access speeds at the time often resulted in a sluggish and unresponsive suit, or worse, due to lag, several seconds worth of stimulation arriving in one blast. As if these problems were not enough, Vivid got into trouble over health concerns, and danger of death.

The suit finally disappeared in mid 2000, when Vivid failed American Federal Trade Commission’s strict standards of testing: Namely that the suit was safe enough for pacemaker wearers, and guaranteed against potentially dangerous electrical surges under moist conditions – such as a successful session with it. Unable to meet these standards – and carrying a severe risk of fatality, Vivid’s Cyber Sex Suit was terminated by the FCC.

The encounter took place in the online game Second Life, so the sex was not real, at least not in the physical sense. Within Second Life, people interact via animated 3D characters called avatars, created using software tools provided by the game. Gamers can write programs to give their characters unique hairstyles and outfits, as well as useful objects like boats and aircraft. They can also program their avatars to perform actions such as dancing and swimming. Now some gamers are using these programming tools to give their avatars genitalia and erotic outfits, and to have them engage in animated cybersex.

Those without the technical skills to write their own programs can also buy sexual positions and toys created by other gamers from shops inside the virtual world. Active communities have blossomed around a breathtaking range of fetishes, and there is a profitable sex industry: the world has its own red-light district, called Amsterdam, where players pose as "escorts" and charge for their services. In my encounter, the sex felt like watching a porn film, with the uncanny feeling that someone I hardly knew was watching with me.

"Simulated 3D sex is fun and erotic for me due in part to the fact that you can explore fantasies that may not always be as practical or possible in real life," says professional dominatrix Horton - or rather, Noche Kandora, the flesh-and-blood man who controls her. Some bisexual or homosexual members of Second Life have experimented with coming out in the game before trying it in real life, says Brenda Brathwaite, a professor of game design at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia. Kandora also says that cybersex is a boon for long-distance couples who can use the game as a graphics-enabled version of phone sex.

Second Life may be throbbing with sexual activity, but it's not easy to enter the sex communities. To begin with, customising a beginner-level avatar into a sexual being is difficult and expensive: genitalia, outfits, more realistic skin and hair, and sexual moves all cost extra unless you can program them for yourself. "You have to be pretty savvy to create a realistic-looking avatar," says Kandora. "Not all users have the time, patience and talent for that."

And though you can buy or make the body, the clothes, the grooming and the know-how, you still have to find a willing partner. Second Life's sex rooms can be difficult to find without a guide, and even if you did stumble upon one, the community might not accept a stranger immediately. The Future of Sex is Science Fiction

Every time I read a headline that contains the term “the future of sex” I brace myself, usually I use something heavy. Often I wait a few days before reading it, just to make sure my blood pressure is low enough to handle the inevitable screaming, panting, and waving around of hands. And when I eventually read the article, listen to the radio documentary, or watch the over-produced television segment, and my fears are confirmed and my passions inflamed I wonder why I even bother.

So it was with great trepidation that I began to read a recent article by Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies’ executive director James Hughes. The article is actually called “From Virtual Sex to No Sex?” but the future of sex phrase is right there in the first sentence, and the piece doesn’t disappoint.

Hughes is hypothesizing about where sex and technology are heading, and proposes that:
"the two most important developments in the technological control of sex are both already occurring; first separating sex from physical contact, and then establishing our control over our sexual feelings altogether."

His thesis amounts to a lot of science fiction and very little else, but raises enough interesting questions to be worth considering.

Hughes’ focus on the ways technology may be used one day to control sexuality are compelling. Consider this picture he paints of the future:
"Eventually we will be able to directly stimulate the parts of the brain that desire specific partners or experiences. In the future we will be able to specifically turn off sexual thoughts about children, and turn on appropriate sexual thoughts about adults. We will be able to make gays straight, and straights gay, and everything in between. There will be no more necessity for sexual boredom between long term partners. We will be able to wire ourselves to only desire sex with our spouses, to only desire it in-body, and to desire it according to an agreed upon frequency. Or we can turn off our jealousy, and turn up our libidos, if we have agreed to a polyamorous lifestyle."

Here we have a suitably futuristic vision of the future of sex; its got mind control, cyborg body parts, and even techie terms like "in-body". Unfortunately it suffers from a simplicity that is stymieing the very researchers Hughes references. Implied in this vision is the fact that desire, love, orientation, and identity are nothing more than toggle switches in our brains that need to be found and can then be turned on and off with the push of a button. Desire, sexual orientation, sexual thoughts are influenced by many factors far more complicated than what genetic researchers refer to as behaviors, and this is the reason that even if researchers manage to convince people they’ve found a “gay gene”, manipulating it will never eliminate people who are gay, or the idea of “gayness”.

Which isn’t to say that we shouldn’t be thinking about the ways technological advances will be used in the future, I just wish it were a little more grounded in both a historical and contemporary understanding of sex research.

Hughes understanding of sexual experience is also a little puzzling, and I’m not entirely sure where it comes from. Arguing that the future of sex is more melding of sex and technology, Hughes writes:
"Electronically mediated sex and porn are safer (no diseases or pregnancy), easier (lengthy courtship and foreplay are unnecessary), more convenient (available any time you are) and more likely to be exactly what you want (your partners can be anyone, or anything, you desire, without any physical defects)."

With the exception of the first point, I’m not sure any of this is true. Would people who engage in on line sexual relationships characterize electronically mediated sex as either easier or more likely to be exactly what they want as sex in real life? It’s my experience, personally and professionally, that sex is messy, and a sexual relationship on line can be as much of a roller coaster as any real life one.

His comments about virtual sex being exactly what we want also fail to ring true. Virtual sex is often (but not always) about playing in the space between fantasy and reality. As a sexual health educator I am constantly having to remind people that sexual fantasy and sexual reality are two separate yet equally important experiences (like Law and Order, but with fewer courtroom appearances). Here Hughes runs roughshod over lived sexual experience in favor of a science fiction that sounds good on paper, and leads him to the questions that interest him most. The problem is that his vision is based on highly debatable research and leaps of logic that require time travel to deal with.

The resulting questions are sexy, to be sure (I mean who doesn’t want to think about issues of consent in robot sex?) but they overshoot the mark and miss a chance to raise more basic questions about sexuality that we still haven’t thought to ask.

Questions like:
Where exactly are the lines between fantasy and reality, and what happens when we cross them virtually versus crossing them in real life?
What is the nature and extent of our sexual agency? If we manage to find a way to consistently and reliably control sexual behavior or thoughts (which is highly unlikely) does this mean we had no sexual free will to begin with?
And finally, if my third tier polyamorous robot lover forgets to feed my primary human partners cat while we’re away on our Mars honeymoon, is it okay for my surrogate sexual partner to withhold sex favors in protest?

I guess I’ll just have to wait for the answers to be revealed when some mainstream media outlet picks up Hughes article and runs with it.

But Alderman wants the real-life courts to settle his grievance with another avatar, or online persona.

On Tuesday, his company, Eros, filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court claiming the avatar known as Volkov Catteneo has violated the trademark on one of his devices called a Sex Gen. Eros claims the avatar has made unauthorized copies of the device and is selling it for a profit.

Alderman's products may exist only in cyberspace, but they bring real money. Alderman recently sold a virtual representation of Amsterdam he created for $50,000 through E-Bay.

He said he sells about 1,000 Sex Gens a year for the equivalent of about $40 each. As Alderman explained it, a Sex Gen is kind of a machine that manipulates avatars into various positions.

"I don't just do sexual positions," Alderman said. "I also do cuddles and kisses and fun things." But the sex is "what people want," he added. "I give them what they want. I'm an entrepreneur."

Online sex has always been about real connection in a virtual environment, despite unflattering stereotypes about who has cybersex and why.

But it seems to me that bringing sex out of chat rooms and into animated platforms is also lifting some of the shame and secrecy that has historically shrouded cybersex.

For outsiders, the thought of "sex by typing" makes little sense. Despite evidence to the contrary, text sex is often considered something only weird people (and writers?) do, and the assumption is they aren't capable of having sexual relationships in real life.

But games and role-playing are a familiar paradigm, even among people who don't indulge in either pursuit. And because video game characters are so exaggeratedly physical, it is not a giant leap to imagine them engaged in sexual activity along with traditional pursuits like acrobatics, fighting and collecting things.

The flurry of press about sex and games has focused mainly on a handful of virtual worlds and video games set to launch in this year, from the blend of The Sims and Yahoo Personals in Naughty America's The Game (NSFW) to Red Light Center's (NSFW) blatantly pornographic online mall. And one big question has been: if they build it, will people come?

My answer is a resounding yes. People will come, if only to see how well the products live up to the hype. The real question we should be asking is: will they stay?

Creating a world where people want to stay -- and pay -- is a huge challenge, in part because it's out of your control. Once you open the platform to the public, it becomes theirs, and the community that forms will determine the fate of your investment.

I talked to two designers whose erotic virtual worlds have been open to the public for more than a year, asking what they've learned from the experience and what has contributed to their success.

Patric Lagny is the designer, programmer and publisher of Sociolotron (NSFW), an online role-playing game known for supporting sex as well as violence.

"Badgirl" is the CEO and team lead of Jewel of Indra, (NSFW) an online environment designed to support sexual exploration and community.

The two titles offer radically different experiences. Sociolotron emphasizes game play and interactive story rather than ILM-worthy graphics, and actively discourages chatting about your life outside the game.

JOI is a 3-D community that offers games in-world. It emphasizes multimedia, beautiful graphics and emergent relationships.

Sociolotron has players; JOI has residents.

Yet both platforms exist because the creators wanted to play in a particular type of environment and couldn't find it, so they built it. Both worlds take every precaution possible, short of home visits, to ensure an adults-only population.

And both creators admit that once the community starts to form, it takes over the product. "The first thing that brings people (to Sociolotron) is the sex," says Patric. "But that's not the reason they stay."

They stay, he says, because of the people they socialize with. "We attract a special kind of person because we have such a heavy emphasis on role play," he says. "The people who stay are a great asset to the community."

Badgirl believes that one of the biggest mistake designers can make "is to tell the residents 'this is what the community is and this is what you're going to do.' The most important feature is the people," she says. "It's their community. It's not your community."

Many of JOI's events and contests emerge from the chat rooms. A running joke about capturing other people's panties led to a panty-collecting game with in-world cash awards and prizes. A new mall that caters only to the Elite Perv Society -- residents who earn a certain threshold of "experience points" by participating in chat -- includes a wedding store for in-world unions.

"This is something that came directly out of the community, and they love it," she says.

Game review : Virtual Fem

The quest to recreate a personalized virtual slut continues in Virtual Fem, a video based AI that you can interact with. German prosecutors have launched an investigation to find anonymous participants of the online computer game Second Life, who are reportedly buying sex with other players posing as children, as well as offering child pornography for sale.

Second Life is an internet-based virtual world with at least 6 million players, where you can choose your appearance, age, gender and colour.

Investigators in the city of Halle are acting on specific information about a German Second Life player, or avatar, who put child pornography images up for sale and paid for sex with underage players or players posing as minors.
"We are trying to find out the identity of this person," Peter Vogt, chief prosecutor from the central office against child pornography told German television. " What is being offered is nothing short of child pornography."

Nick Schader, a reporter with the investigative television programme, Report Mainz and a member of Second Life, said he had been "shocked to see" the virtual child pornography meetings to which he was invited for 500 Linden dollars - around £1.50. He said the same group of people subsequently put him in touch with traders in real child pornography.

Robin Harper, the deputy president of the San Francisco firm Linden Lab which runs Second Life, said: "We will find out who is behind this, and then inform the police."

Whilst in the US "virtual" child pornography is not a crime, in Germany it is punishable by up to five years in prison.

Those under 18 are banned from the adult area of Second Life and adults are banned from the "Teen Area", but critics say in reality it is impossible to check the ages of participants. Some players dress up as child figures, but with no sexual motivation, purchasing "skins" to make them look like minors. But so-called "age play", in which players request sex with other players who dress up as child avatars, has encouraged a growth in players posing as children in order to make money. News from Information Week said that a guy paid ?50,000 to buy a virtual Second Life sex business in eBay.

One of the landmark businesses on Second Life, Amsterdam, sold on eBay Monday for ?50,000 to a buyer located, appropriately enough, in the Netherlands, said the developer of the popular adult-oriented business.

Amsterdams developer, Kevin Alderman of Tampa, Fla., put the site up for sale on eBay last week, and it sold at 6:34 a.m. PDT, according to the eBay listing. The buyer didnt bid; he just paid the asking price.

We werent able to find out who the buyer is; he goes by nedstede2769 on eBay, where his 3-year-old account has no feedback. Alderman said he didnt want to give the buyers name without checking first.

Aldermans company, Eros LLC, specializes in adult business on the Internet, with 90% of its business in Second Life. He said Eros sold Amsterdam so it could concentrate on building a new, much larger sex business in the game. While Amsterdam is open to anyone logged on to the game, the new business will be available only to adults.

"I felt Amsterdam should be open to the public as its an SL icon," said Alderman.
